Background
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology offers tremendous economic opportunities to public and private organisations for enhancing their efficiency and productivity. This technology also promises to improve the quality of life and safety of citizens.
However at present, technological challenges prevent the wide take-up of RFID: lack of global frequency standards, low reading rates, interference with other radio sources, insufficient encryption, the cost of implementation and end-user concerns.
Hence one key challenge for
decision-makers is to create a common vision and a set of goals on how RFID can
keep Europe more innovative and competitive in the world economy. At the same
time citizens must have the tools and freedom of choice they need to protect
their privacy and security.
