How do I get involved?
Get involved in three ways:
- Invitees: The actual event is invitation only. The invitation
process is being coordinated by the Directorate General for Interpretation.
They will
begin contacting potential Speakers in January, with invitations to attend the event
as delegates issued the following month.
- If you have received such an invitation, click here.
- Exhibitors: Organisations which exhibit will - obviously - be invited.
- Everyone: Finally, everyone can get involved via
this site's interactive features (below).
- Note: This is why signing up to this website has nothing to do with attending the event. While you have to sign up to this website to use these features, this is not the same thing as attending the event.
This Site's Interactive Features
This site's interactive features are available to all, regardless of whether they attend the event or not.
Signing up to this Website
To use the site's interactive features, you first need to sign up to the site, which is open to everyone and has nothing to do with attending the event (see How does the Invitation Process work?, above).
You need to sign up to this website to:
- Create a Public Profile for yourself on this website - see Raise Your Profile, below
- Contact other website users - see What is the "Email Me" function?, below
- Add online comments to conference sessions and exhibits (to be published later this year) - see How do I Add Comments?, below
What is an 'Information Society Portal Events Account"?
Or:
The SignUp Form says that my email address or login are already registered!
If, when you sign up, the form recognises your login name or your email address, it's because you have already signed up to another event website published by DG Information Society & Media (e.g., IST 2006, Kรถln 2007), and so already have an Information Society Portal Events Account, which makes signing up to the Broadband Gap website faster and easier:
-
log in using the username and password from these previous events;
-
Note: the SignUp Page provides a Forgot Your Password? function.
-
-
you will be prompted whether you wish to sign up to the Broadband 2007 site - follow the link to do so;
-
you will arrive on the registration form with your Profile information from the most recent event (organisation and address information, texts about you, photo, etc.) automatically filled in;
-
Edit the form to suit this event (see Raise Your Profile, below), taking care to fill in all mandatory fields, and select Save;
-
You will then be prompted to "go back to what you were doing before". Follow the link to return to where you were.
Raise Your Profile: Go Public
"tell site visitors about yourself, your organisation and your interests in this field"
When you Sign Up to this site (above), you will have the option of publishing your Profile. You can use the resulting Public Profile to tell site visitors about yourself, your organisation and your interests in this field. You can upload links to your websites, some documents for visitors to download and a photo so people will be able to recognise you at the event.
More about your Public Profile:
- It does not include your email address
- It is
essential if you want to use this site's networking facilities,
which allow you:
- to contact other site users - and be contacted by them - before and after the event, without publishing your email address (see What is the "Email Me" function?, below)
- to post comments on the conference sessions and exhibits (see How do I add Comments?, below)
- You can Publish and Edit it at any time
- Conference Speakers & Exhibitors: if you make a presentation or speech at one of the event's conference sessions, or if you are an Exhibitor, we will (if you agree) ask one of our subcontractors to help you create and publish your Public Profile.
How do I Add Comments?
"other participants can see at a glance where your interests lie and what your opinions are"
What is it? The 'Add a Comment' link at the bottom of each Conference Session and Exhibit Description allows you to comment on them. Your comment will appear immediately on the page, and will include a link to your Public Profile, so people interested in your comment can find out more about you (see Raise Your Profile, above). Note that your Profile will also link to all of your comments across the site, so other participants can see at a glance where your interests lie and what your opinions are.
To use this feature, you need to be logged in and signed up to the site, and have a Public Profile:
-
If you are not logged in, you'll see a link to the log in page, from which you can log in, or get your password if you've forgotten it.
-
If you have logged in using your IS Portal Account (above), but have not actually signed up to the Broadband Gap website, you will see a sign up to the website link (if you use this, don't forget to add some information to your Profile - see Raise Your Profile, above).
-
If you are logged in but do not have a Public Profile, you will see a "Publish my Profile" link (if you use this, don't forget to add some information to your Profile - see Raise Your Profile, above).
What is the "Email Me" function?
"Contact each other without displaying your email address"
What is it? All site users who add this feature to their Public Profile will be able to contact each other. You therefore cannot use this feature to contact others unless you activate this feature yourself, allowing them to contact you.
The following anti-spam measures are in place:
- Your email address will not be published on-line
- Instead, users will need to log in and fill in a form. You will receive their message by email. You will only give the sender your email address if you choose to reply
- You will be able to report unsuitable emails. If we judge a user to have mis-used this feature, we will prevent them from using it again.
- Note that the above information is included in each email, and that other anti-spam measures are being considered. If they are added, you will be informed.
How do I activate "Email Me"? Simply check the relevant box on the registration form, and make sure you have a Public Profile - both checkboxes are at the bottom of the form.
