Quality Criteria for Health Related Websites

The Communication "eEurope 2002: Quality Criteria for Health related Websites" is now available in all 11 languages in PDF format.

As part of the eEurope: Health Online actions, it was agreed to hold a workshop of Member State representatives and experts to develop guidelines for a quality criteria for health related websites.

The Workshop report, from the 7-8 June 2001 Workshop, is now available, as well as draft Guidelines on Quality Criteria for Health Related Websites.

The objective of quality criteria for health related websites is to boost consumer confidence in use of such sites and foster best practice in the development of sites.  A wide range of quality criteria have already been developed, some of which were presented at the workshop.  The primary objective of the eEurope initiative in this field is to provide a common basis from which Member States can develop quality assurance tools at national or regional level.

The draft guidelines were open for comment until end October 2001 through our eHealth mailbox.

Comments were very constructive, and in particular drew attention to the need for additional specific criteria for health sites.

All comments are addressed in the forthcoming Communication from the Commission to the Council, European Parliament, Economic & Social Committee, and Committee of Regions, due to be published in June 2002 under the Spanish Presidency. The Communication will include a final statement of “Criteria for Basic Good Conduct in the Development & Maintenance of Health Related Websites”. All issues of implementation are to be addressed at the Member State or local level.
