European Commission welcomes strong support for eHealth
(ESA) Costas Stefanis, Greek Minister for Health, issued a ministerial declaration on behalf of the Presidency, and agreed by the 33 EU, EEA and Acceding Countries Ministers attending a high-level conference on eHealth in Brussels. Having seen for themselves the best eHealth practices already implemented in Europe and the benefits these have brought in terms of cost savings, improved quality and access to care, Ministers expressed their renewed commitment to developing national and regional eHealth implementation plans, and to exploring the possibilities for co-ordinating these at European level. (27 May 2003)

eHealth awarded
(CORDIS - IST Results) MEDCOM, HYGEIANET and SURGETICA were three of the four honourable mentions, named on 22 May, at the first ever eEurope awards for eHealth. All three benefited from EC funded RTD. The prize winners and runners-up were selected by an independent jury from a short list of 42 initiatives representing best practices. Thanks to the Danish healthcare network, MedCom, today in Denmark 1 lab result is sent electronically every second of every day. From its inception in 1995 to the present day, MedCom has continually grown; currently all hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies and 86 per cent of GPs use the network. MedCom has also enabled Denmark to have the highest rate of e-prescriptions in the world. Its strength lies in the use of one standard electronic form used by everyone in Denmark in the same way. Patients and healthcare practitioners securely interconnect and exchange information electronically saving Danish healthcare 60 million euros each year. (26 May 2003)
