Are your firm’s electronic communication tools secure?
Commission launches information technology risk preparedness survey

The European Commission has launched a survey to gauge the ability of European firms to handle security threats, such as those posed by viruses, spyware, hackers and crackers to the security of their electronic communications tools and networks.

This survey is part of the Commission’s eEurope 2005 Action Plan to develop a dynamic environment for e-business through widespread availability of broadband access at competitive prices and a secure information infrastructure (see also /information_society/eeurope/2005/all_about/trust/index_en.htm

It is being conducted on the Commission’s behalf by experts in the field of computer networks, information security, risk management and business continuity, in co-operation with their colleagues in several European Union Member States. Besides the survey, these experts are organizing round table discussions on the measures that companies ought to be taking to manage their risks.

The survey and the round tables offer businesses the opportunity to express their opinion about this business critical subject, and to shape future European policies. Their recommendations will be put to European Commission as an input to policy-making.

Participation

By taking 30 minutes of their time to fill the detailed questionnaire (80 questions), firms participating in the survey can produce a preliminary ‘self assessment’ which will be helpful in raising corporate awareness of information and communication technology (ICT) risks. All participating firms will receive an information folder on a CD with detailed material about risk prevention and awareness. This folder contains a list of potential weaknesses in the ICT infrastructure and relevant measures, supplemented by examples, case studies, relevant articles, reports and studies.

Results
When the survey is complete, the results and associated recommendations will be published on the website of the new European Network and Information Security Agency: http://www.enisa.europa.eu

Participants can also obtain more information about the survey and possible participation via e-mail from risk-preparedness@unisys.com and via the study website: http://www.unisys.be/services/security/risk__preparedness/index.htm
