ACTIVITIES :: Safer Internet Programme :: Projects

A wide variety of projects funded by the Safer Internet Programme

In order to achieve its objectives, the Safer Internet Programme has adopted two complementary approaches. It funds the Safer Internet Centres that are developed at national level to take into account national sensitivities and needs and are co-ordinated at European level. It also funds pan-European projects, with partners in some or all EU Member States, which aim at gathering information and coordinating pan-European and international activities in the field of safer Internet.

The projects to be funded are selected following a call for proposals. The Safer Internet Programme is funding now more than 30 projects, with even more funded in the past.

The Safer Internet Centres: a national approach coordinated at European level

The Safer Internet Programme funds Safer Internet Centres present in 30 European countries whose main objectives are awareness raising regarding online risks amongst children, parents, teachers and carers, offering advice about staying safe online to young people via helplines and providing contact points (hotlines) to report illegal content.

Some of the Safer Internet Centres also run helplines where users can find out more information about surfing safe and get advice on how to deal with situations such as cyber bullying.

Fighting illegal content

One of the main aims at the Safer Internet Programme is fighting against illegal content and especially against child abuse material online.

In order to achieve this objective, in addition to the hotlines run by the Safer Internet Centres, the Safer Internet Programme has been funding projects such as CIRCAMP the thematic network for international law enforcement co-operation; I-Dash, The Investigator's Dashboard which aims at proving the feasibility of a European database with known child pornography and a standard for efficient data exchange between the various national police forces; MAPAP, a project that measures and analyses the peer to peer activity against paedophile content; the INTERPOL International Child Sexual Exploitation Image Database, whose aim is the prevention and detection of offences of sexual abuse against children through the identification of victims and abusers; or FIVES which will develop a self-contained tools set that will focus on speed and efficient execution to help in police investigations of large amount of data.

Pan-European filtering and content labelling

In support to the awareness raising activities carried out by the Safer Internet Centers, the Safer Internet Programme has funded the PEGI Online project, a supplement to the Pan European Game Information system PEGI to cover online electronic games; the Quatro Plus project which aims at allowing end users to record and share their agreement or disagreement with a label's description and to create their own labels to share directly with their friends; or the SIP-BENCH II study whose objective is to help end users (notably parents and child carers) to choose the most appropriate parental control tool that best fits their needs.

Improving our knowledge about Europe's children Internet use

In order to gather information about existing and emerging uses, risks and consequences of online technologies for children's lives, projects such as EUKidsOnlineII, ROBERT, POG and EU NET ADB are funded under the Safer Internet Programme.

Involving European civil society

In order to involve as many stakeholders as possible in the discussions and exchanges on safer Internet topics, the Safer Internet Programme is funding projects such as the European NGO Alliance for Child Safety Online and supports the youth panels set up by each Safer Internet Centre.
