Safer Internet Day 2011

Internet is more than a game, it's your life!"

The 8th edition of Safer Internet Day was celebrated in Europe, as well as in more than 30 countries around the world, on 8 February 2011 under the slogan "Internet is more than a game, it's your life!"

On Safer Internet Day, Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of the Digital Agenda and patron of Safer Internet Day, visited "Child Focus", which runs the Belgian Safer Internet Centre. She attended workshops organised with two groups of 12-year old children and their teachers that showed how children can be taught how to take a closer look at their "virtual lives" and discover their possible impact on their real/offline lives.

What you post online remains online. Think before you post!

The 7th edition of Safer Internet Day was celebrated in Europe, as well as in more than 30 countries around the world, on 9 February 2010 under the slogan "Think before you post!".

The Commission organized a round table in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the theme "Think before you post!". On the day the Commission has also presented the results of an independent assessment of the implementation of the Safer Social Networking Principles for the EU, signed by 20 lead providers in Europe on 10 February 2009.

Empowering and protecting young people on social networks

The 6th edition of Safer Internet Day was organized under the patronage of the Information Society and Media Commissioner, Viviane Reding and was celebrated through 500 events in 50 countries all over the world. The 2009 edition has a particular focus on youngsters’ safety on social networking sites. 

On Safer Internet Day, at the central event organized by the European Commission in Luxembourg in the presence of Mrs Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, a self-regulatory document has been signed by major social networks active in Europe regarding the online safety of under 18s.

Safer Internet Day 2009 was also the launch date of an information campaign empowering teenagers to keep control when online.

Safer Internet Day 2008
European Youth Forum on Safer Internet

In celebration of Safer Internet Day 2008, the European Commission organised a Youth Forum on Safer Internet in Brussels where youth from 9 European countries, Austria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Iceland Netherlands, Sweden and UK discussed issues related to their use of online technologies. They presented their recommendations to Meglena Kuneva, Commissioner for Consumer Protection, industry and politicians. 

Safer Internet 2008 competition

The INSAFE network organised a Safer Internet Day 2008 Competition on the topic: "Life online is what YOU make of it". Young people were invited to express their ideas by creating a multimedia project for the Safer Internet Day 2008 Competition. Events were organised by national Safer Internet Centres in 55 countries in celebration of Safer Internet Day 2008.

Signature of the European Framework for Safer Mobile use by teenagers

The Safer Internet Day 2007 was organised under the patronage of Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding; it was celebrated across almost 40 countries worldwide and focused mainly on child safety and mobile phones. It had a particular emphasis on safer mobile phone use, involving the signature of the European Framework for Safer Mobile use by younger teenagers and children by leading mobile operators and content providers, publication of the summary report on the results of the Commission’s public consultation on child safety and mobile phones as well a national awareness-raising activities across Europe.

The worldwide “blogathon” for safer internet

A total of 37 countries, and around 100 organisations took part in the Safer Internet Day on 7 February 2006, organised under the patronage of Commissioner Viviane Reding . In addition to the many national, regional and local events, there was a worldwide "blogathon" for safer internet: a wide range of organisations active in promoting internet made postings on the blog and invited comments from visitors, children, schools and parents. The blog, which included content in several languages, had a geographical focus that moved west through the global time zones, from New Zealand to Argentina.

The story-telling contest

On 8 February 2005, the Safer Internet Day took place across Europe and world-wide. It was celebrated by 65 organisations in 30 countries across the world from Australia to Iceland, and Russia to Singapore. Safer Internet Day 2005, held under the patronage of Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding, featured an Internet adventure story-telling contest for children in 19 countries and 16 Other Safer Internet Day activities include conferences, the launch of Internet literacy programmes in schools, media releases on radio and television and the launch of several new Safer Internet websites.

Safer Internet Day 2004

On 6 February 2004, the Safer Internet Day took place across Europe. This celebration is being promoted by the SAFER INTERNET Awareness Campaign, an initiative by the SafeBorders project supported by the SAFT project, both funded under the EU Safer Internet Programme.
