 The European Winners

The award ceremony took place on 17th June 2011 in Brussels in the framework of the Digital Agenda Assembly. Awards were given by Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda.

http://palkan.de/  The website „Palk@n - the pupils‘ magazine“ is an online portal made by a pupils of the 5th and 6th grade of a German Secondary School (target group: 10 to 15 years), which in various ways meets the fields of interest of children. Thematically, the website focuses on learning, communication among peers and information about current events

www.habbolive.nl Habbolive.nl is a fansite made by Wim (14), Mark (15) and Kimberly (15), dedicated to the virtual world Habbo Hotel. Habbolive gives the Habbo-fan all the latest information about what is going on in Habbo and gives children nice games to play.

www.superpilot.cba.pl  The website was created by two 16 years old Junior High School students and it addresses issues of general safety and online safety and provides educational aids and resources. The animated hero – Superpilot – accompanies children as they learn languages, practice grammar, discover geography, mathematics, geometry etc.

www.Hetklokhuis.nl Hetklokhuis.nl is the website belonging to the Dutch educational television program for children. It is an innovative, fun and educational site with a lot of possibilities to create content, for example via the tools SketchMaker and GameMaker.

http://www.kinderzeitmaschine.de/  The children’s website „Children’s Time Machine – History for children“, a private initiative, is a safe and advertisement-free website for children, focusing on history of humankind. Children are guided through various historic epochs by the avatar Lucy, meeting representatives of the different eras and with animations, images, quizzes discovering history.

www.ketnet.be/  The Website is of the Flemish children’s- TV-channel Ketnet. Children find their favourite characters and TV-shows online, where they offer entertainment, information and education. The website aims to enable children to take action and be creative.

 

How were the winners selected?


A pilot competition was organised between October 2010 and April 2011 in 14 countries (Belgium, Italy, Czech Republic, Latvia, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia, Iceland, and Spain) with the support of Safer Internet Centres.


The Safer Internet Centres received 202 submissions from young people and 585 submissions made by public and private sectors.


The winners of the national competitions competed then for the European Award.


The EC appointed a European jury consisting of 7 high profile professional specialists of content, design and needs for children with academic and business background. The Jury was chaired by Prof. Sonia Livingstone from London School of Economics and Political Science, who was also present at the award ceremony.


Between end of April and beginning of May, the European jury selected a shortlist of approximately 50% nominees for each category.


The shortlist was subject to comments from representatives of the Safer Internet EU Youth Panel, Parents' and Teachers Panel.


At Mid May, the jury met in Luxembourg to select the final winners.

www.kybersikana.eu   Website created by Monika and Tereza is dedicated to the cyberbullying. The website consist of advices for children and their parents on what it is, and how to avoid and/or handle cyberbullying. It also shows video presentations of a prevention program for pupils prepared and performed by the authors of the website in different elementary schools

Iceland

http://leikumaflist.is Elitan is a youth drama club from the school Háteigsskóli. The students, age 14-16 years old, used the 5 advices on net-ethics introduced in the SAFT “Think before you post” campaign in 2007 to create a 5 piece short play. The website was used to promote the play in the local community and later on also across Iceland.

http://www.wix.com/lvprofins/labie-darbi The site is created by two 14 year old boys, who have created a website promoting healthy lifestyle, teaching children how to do sport exercises correctly and advising activities of spending time in a more qualitative and entertaining way.
Netherlands

Slovenia

Infected - video The video "Infected" was created by six 9th grade youngsters from Primary School Naklo. The main message is computer infection with virus and that is the important to protecting one’s computer. The content is easy to understand by children universally, since it does not include spoken word.

www.alik.cz   Alik is the most popular dogs’name in Czechia. Alik is a good friend of children online. It is advising children where to go, suggesting appropriate online games, opening space for registered children to meet their friends and even offering links to other websites dedicated to children. The website is operated by the Mafra media house.
France

 

http://www.simply-land.com/  Simply-land.com is a company made, edutainment website for children from 5 to 11 years. By meeting the character of the site, the children discover an imaginary world and are invited to participate in educative games.
They can also build their own house, communicate with their friends and participate in drawing and poetry contests.

Greece

www.imeakia.gr  www.imeakia.gr addresses all kids 4-12 old. With 10 heroes as guides, the portal’s offers educational and recreational activities: knowledge, action or thinking games, painting and printing drawings, downloading useful applications and taking part in competitions. Set up by the Cultural Centre “Hellenic World”, the portal informs about educational programs and serves as a communication space among children.
Hungary

www.egyszervolt.hu  Egyszevolt.hu - once upon a time. Is an edutainment site, where children from age of 3-4 can learn about stories, poems, songs and handicrafts. The site is developed for the age group with animated animal figures and audio help and contains also a games section.
Iceland

http://nams.is/ The National Centre for Educational Materials (NCEM) provides the compulsory schools (6-16) in Iceland with diverse educational materials. Books, online materials, video and CD´s, online educational games and modules using pictures, animations, sound, text and video, allow the user to learn, using all senses.
Italy

www.navediclo.it  The ship Clo is a web site created in 2006 with the goal of sharing on the web. The site was created for a target age of 5 to 11, in order to ensure full and meaningful activities for digital natives.
The website is created by a private person, Silvia Carbotti.
Latvia

www.pasakas.net Is a portal collecting fairy-tales, they have audio stories and fairy-tales, games, drawing and coloring option, rhymes, cinema of fairy tails, lullabies, riddles etc. The site promotes qualitative time spent at the computer together with whole family.
Netherlands

Poland

www.wierszedladzieci.pl   The website addresses children between 5 and 12 years old. Through several design elements, story lines and features such as poems, theatre pieces, puzzles, quizzes etc. it encourages interaction and provides opportunities for children to learn, be active and creative. It was created by a private person.
Portugal

http://kids.sapo.pt   SAPO Kids is a full Internet portal for children up to 12 years old, created by Portugal Telecom. It features news, videos, photo galleries, games, book previews, jokes and riddles, as well as educational tools such as a dictionary and a Portuguese language version of the MIT developed Scratch programming language.
Slovenia

http://junior.si/ekopotep/ National Geographic Junior website, owned by publishing company Rokus Klett, produced by WMD, is educational, fun, interesting and interactive. Especially interesting four younger children is the game Ekopotep where children can learn about rare and endangered species and plants of Slovenia.
Spain

http://www.rtve.es/infantil/  The main objective of the website is teaching children to use the Internet safely with the help of their parents/care takers. The main goal is to educate them in information technology and communication through digital entertainment. This learning experience is also extended to parents who are not participating yet in these networks. The site was created by Televisión Española in 2009.
