India
India and the European Union are committed to an equal and dynamic dialogue on all subjects of interest and concern to them as major entities in their own regions, and as emerging global actors on the world stage. The European Union is already India's first partner in terms of trade and actual investment inflows and is in the front rank of its partners in the fields of economic and development cooperation.
Since the signature of a Cooperation Agreement on Science and Technology, India and Europe's relationship has gone from strength to strength. With the commitment of both parties to continue to promote RTD co-operation in the field of Information Society Technologies and share the goal of a knowledge based economy, India and Europe are together addressing worldwide issues as well as the role of science in society, knowledge and digital divide to enhance the quality of life for both the citizens of India and Europe. Since 2001, Information Society Dialogues between the EU and India are held.
An FP7 ICT project supports an EU-India ICT Research and Development Cooperation with programmes such as Euro-Indian ICT Cooperation Initiative (MONSOON project) provides the European IST community with the opportunity to find potential partners in ICT RTD funding initiatives, share and exchange knowledge on ICT topics, and create project consortia. A series of ICT co-operation workshops are being organised under this project. These activities are complemented by the project INCITE, which includes preparatory activities for the establishment of a National Contact Point in India, a mapping exercise of EU-India ICT complementarities, as well as nine training events. A new project, EuroIndia, building on the achievements and momentum created by previous projects, EuroIndia 2004 & MONSOON, was launched in January 2008.
EuroIndia seeks to:
- Identify, exploit and sustain EU & Indian RTD potential through an exhaustive mapping of the Indian ICT knowledge, research and innovation landscape;
- Provide critical inputs to strengthen policy dialogue between the EU’s i2010 strategy and the Indian Information Society policy;
- Reinforce the promotion of the EU ICT programme and increase Indian commitment and participation;
- Network a wide range of stakeholders through an institutional mechanism and a well-defined agenda in order to evolve and support a vibrant EuroIndia ICT research community;
- Help synchronise ICT research priorities and objectives.
