Tyre Pressure Monitoring System - TPMS
Commercially available
PRINCIPLE
A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is an electronic system to monitor
the air pressure inside a pneumatic tyre.
EXPLICATION
Direct TPMS delivers real time tyre pressure information.
The driver of the vehicle is informed either via a gauge or a simple low
pressure warning light.
Direct TPMS employs physical pressure sensors inside each tyre together
with some means of sending that information from inside the tyre to the
vehicle instrument cluster.
Indirect TPMS measures the air pressure indirectly by monitoring
individual wheel speeds and other signals available in the vehicle.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring improves vehicle safety, aids drivers in maintaining
their vehicle tyres and hence can help reduce the amount of CO2 emissions
released into the atmosphere.

The video proposed on the right side and produced by Johnson Controls illustrates a new EU legislation which comes into force in 2012 as part of accident reductions by monitoring tire pressure (TPMS) and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
