Night Vision
Commercially available
PRINCIPLE
Significant numbers ofroad fatalities happen at night. With normal
dipped lights, the driver's visibility> is reduced to around 40
meters at night.
At night, the perception of depth and colour recognition is compromised,
resulting in detecting an obstacle or risk too late.
Upper beam dazzles the oncoming traffic and is therefore of limited use.
EXPLANATION
A Night Vision system provides increased night-time visibility
by far- or near-infrared sensors with a range equivalent to upper beam
headlights.
The system does not dazzle oncoming traffic, since infrared light is
invisible to the human eye.
The illuminated scene is presented to the driver in a special display,
which gives a better view of the road ahead, including other vehicles and
obstacles in the distance.
The driver can therefore detect dangerous situations sooner and
react more quickly.
