Tecapsy awarded at the World Summit for Sustainable Development

Johannesburg, 4 September 2002

Through the World Summit Business Awards for Sustainable Development Partnerships, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) aim to bring recognition to effective multi-stakeholder partnerships, which have been designed to pursue and achieve sustainable development.

The objective of the Awards is to demonstrate how multi-stakeholder partnerships can contribute effectively to sustainable development in support of the key dimensions: economic, social and environmental. The Awards highlight concrete actions taken by business in partnership with other stakeholders, and raise awareness of these achievements. The Awards therefore, support the ICC-WBCSD Business Action for Sustainable Development initiative, the preparations by UNEP towards the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and the Global Compact of the UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

TECAPSY - Trans-European Car-Pooling & Parking Systems - has been awarded for its contribution to Sustainable Development.

Supported by the European Union Road Federation, this TEN-Telecom co-financed project shows how carpooling and car parking services can be combined and integrated into the transport services available in any city or region. It provides advice and the general framework for any site seeking to introduce and operate these services.

This partnerships has demonstrated that cooperation and sound application toward sustainable traffic solutions can strengthen service performance, improve social and environmental conditions, enhance relations with local communities and create competitive advantages in today’s markets, globally and locally.

Carpooling, on its own, already exists in several countries and is increasingly being organised. The added value for sites using TECAPSY is that it is promoted and marketed as part of the mix of transport services on offer using the most effective communications media. The result: more mobility, less traffic.
