eValues Workshop
Abstract
The eVALUES project aims to provide a Trans-European e-Library service based on Internet to Visually Impaired. The service opens the possibility of reading books and having access to written information using Text-to-Speech, through a PC or a portable hand-held PDA enabling mobility.
Workshop
eVALUES held a workshop with a demonstration of the application and service at an important conference in Santander, Spain on December 5, 2004. The eVALUES project coordinator was invited by ONCE (the Spanish National Blind Organisation) which was organising the conference, in order to present and demonstrate the mobile service and let future potential users try the service themselves.
Around 65 blind and Visually Impaired interested in new technology specialised for improving their environment and every day tasks attended the workshop. There were around 16 companies and organisations present at the conference showing and demonstrating their products and services at several workshops.
Moviquity (Spain) was the eVALUES project partner present at the workshop in its roll of coordinator. Since the conference was for the Spanish blind and Visually Impaired community and it was held in Spanish, also made this the natural choice.
Moviquity showed the eVALUES application and demonstrated how the service works, searching for e-books and downloading these for later speech rendering. Moviquity presented the general description of the service but also some technical details as well as describing the purpose of a Market Validation project, its purpose and the future plans for the service.
Later during the workshop the participants had the opportunity to try the service and the user interface. At the end of the workshop there was session for questions and comments where the users were quite engaged and eager to know when the service would be made available for the ONCE members.
