eVALUES Participation in AVIOS

This is the abstract of a conference organised by Loquendo - a partner in the eVALUES project - at AVIOS (Applied Voice Input/Output Society).

AUTHOR: Luisa Cordano/ Silvio Nasi/Patrizia Pautasso
SPEAKER: Silvio Nasi
THEME: Case Studies/Applied Technology

TITLE: Helping Visually Impaired People with Embedded Speech Technologies

The objective of the presentation will be to illustrate how embedded speech technology can be applied in real solutions that impact the visually impaired and elderly population. The results and achievements obtained in a European Funded research project called eVALUES (E-library Voice AppLication for eUropean Blind, Elderly and Sight-impaired) will be presented. This multilingual project started in mid-2004 and it involves the national blind associations of Italy and Spain as well as two important system integrators from these countries. If possible a demonstration of this application will be carried out to show the audience its potentiality.

After the presentation of the case study, a brief analysis of the state-of-the-art enhancements of the embedded technologies, which were necessary for the realization application, will be carried out. This analysis will also describe the issues of integrating the technologies on today’s mobile devices such as PDAs, smartphones, and other mobile equipment. The main challenge is the integration of a speech solution in a low-cost device with limited processing power and battery life, yet maintaining high-quality output and robustness to environmental noise.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: how speech technologies can help people with disabilities, the impact of human factors, embedded speech technologies, research and state-of-the-art
