eSafety in 2003
The first meeting of the eSafety Forum Steering Group took place on 17 January 2003. The Steering Group approved the list of members, established the Working Groups and laid down the Workprogramme for 2003.The list of
The 1st Plenary Session of the eSafety Forum was organised on
22 April 2003. The Forum discussed the reports
of the Working Groups on eCall, Accident Causation Data, Business case
and HMI. Four new working groups were established on Traffic and Travel
Information, RTD, International Co-operation, Implementation Road Maps.
Based on the results of the eSafety Working Group and other
consultations, the Commission adopted in September 2003 a
Communication on Information and Communications Technologies for Safe
and Intelligent Vehicles. The Communication brings forward the
actions the Commission intends to take in order to accelerate the
development, large-scale deployment and use of active safety systems,
called the Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems.
The eleven actions of the Communication fall into three categories, namely promoting Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems, adapting the regulatory and standardisation provisions and finally, removing the societal and business obstacles.

The 10th World Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) took place in Madrid, Spain on 16-19 November 2003. The European Commission, represented by DG Information Society and by DG Transport and Energy, welcomed on its Exhibition Stand the most advanced projects in the field. Real demonstrations (cars, prototype equipment, location based services, computer presentations) from many projects were also shown to visitors.
During the Congress, eSafety was presented in a High-Level Plenary Session, Strategy and Technical Sessions.

10th ITS World Congress, Madrid, 16-20 Nov. 2003
The 2nd Plenary Session of the eSafety Forum took take place in Madrid on November 17, 2003 on the occasion of the 10th Intelligent Transport Systems and Services World Congress. The Forum which featured high-level plenary speakers and a panel discussion discussed a Draft 2003 Summary Report, which was completed after the Forum and complemented with the Forum Recommendations.
