Application areas
Here are some examples of the ways in which "platforms for collective awareness and action" could contribute to spontaneous behavioural changes that can ease or prevent the “perfect storm”:
► Quantifying reliable indicators of the "marginal benefit" made by individuals, e.g. enabling measures of "Personal Carbon Allowances" or "Individual Life Footprints" which can then be compared and even traded among organisations and citizens;
• The Norfolk Island Carbon/Health Evaluation
► Contributing and accessing in real-time information on resource consumption, e.g. electricity, lighting or heating, at individual, community and global levels, also through mobile devices, which can increase energy efficiency;
• FINSENY project: analysing energy-specific requirements and prepare for Smart Energy
► Creating 'virtual communities for social change' by sharing/publishing good practices among individuals and communities, through a "universal wiki" allowing citizens to be sources of innovative ideas, creating awareness about resource and environmental impact of consumers' choices, ranking eco-friendly products and eventually creating a more environmentally-savvy culture; a first step in this direction would require a clear indication of energy efficiency criteria also in online marketing, and machine readable labelling of the carbon footprint of products;
• SPREAD, sustainable Lifestyles 2050
• echo: open source community for sustainable changes and living democracy
• EUREAPA tool (OPEN, One Planet Economy Network)
• ICLEI, Local governments for sustainability
► Enabling automatic decisional systems supporting decisions based on efficiency and ecological impact (e.g. a mobile application suggesting whether to take a taxi or a train, based on cost, speed and impact on the environment);
• Urban Eco Map: create people awareness to take eco-conscious decisions at local level
• SUNSET: exploiting social networks to manage urban mobility in a sustainable manner
► Connecting to environmental sensors locally and all over the world ("taking the temperature of the planet"), through easy and effective interfaces (Visual Analytics), in order to gain an "objective", "near real time" and global awareness/monitoring of environmental conditions;
• Eyeonearth: collecting environmental information from social networks
• SENSEI - Integrating the Physical with the Digital World of the Network of the Future
► Feeding these environmental data into complex integrated ecological, social and economic models including feedback loops, bringing them to the level of sophistication of weather and climate modelling;
• SAPERE project: Self-Aware Pervasive Services Ecosystems
► Accessing results of (and contributing to) global simulations and statistics coming from multiple -and distributed- sources, building a Wikipedia of statistics to increase citizen's confidence and trust in forecasts, simulations and scenarios;
► Supporting/enabling a grid for distributed production and sharing/trading of renewable energy locally generated by citizens; supporting exchange and recycling of goods, allowing-facilitating the labelling of goods and services;
• The Foundation on Economic Trends
► Supporting eco-conscious Smart Cities, enabling common measurement frameworks for industries ("corporate social responsibility"), supporting telemedicine and other eco-friendly and citizen-centric public services;
• United Nations Global Compact strategic policy initiative
► Contributing to the definition and measurement of alternative mechanism for co-creation of value and wealth redistribution among stakeholders beyond monetisation (e.g. social currencies based on social reputation, distributed P2P finance, microfinancing, etc.)
• JUMO: to get involved in high-quality non-profit organisations
• FundingCircle: lending/borrowing money directly between people and business
• Zopa: lending/borrowing money directly between people
• Freecycle: grassroots and nonprofit movement of people who are giving stuff for free
► Develop new forms of e-Democracy and e-Participation to topics of social relevance.

• Theyworkforyou: monitoring the activity of UK politicians
• AVAAZ: connecting citizens to drive sustainable political decisions
• OPENGENIUS: an open source crowdfunding platform for scientific research
