Open Day, Berlaymont - 9 May 2009

special event, citizens were able to see concretely what the European Union

On 11 February 2009, the European Commission signed a joint declaration
together with the European Parliament and Council establishing 11 February as
European 112 Day. A full program of activities was scheduled for the celebration of the
first European 112 Day in Brussels, including a workshop organized by the

implementation of 112, a rescue exercise by the firemen
of Murcia (Spain) in collaboration with the Parliament's Security Unit and an
event organised by EENA where the 112 anthem was released. In addition, events in a number of Member
States promoted the simple three-digit number that can save lives.

112 citizens' event - 3 June 2008
With Europeans as likely to spend a vacation in Paris or Budapest as at the seaside in their own country, they need a single emergency number: one they can easily remembered and will quickly put them in touch with the emergency services they need. This single European emergency number is 112. To raise awareness of 112 ahead of the summer holidays, Commissioner Viviane Reding launched a dedicated 112 website with country information.
Commissioner Viviane Reding and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Diana Wallis jointly opened an exhibition dedicated to 112, which was held in the ground floor of the Berlaymont from 2 to 4 June 2008. During the event, Mr Sven-Runo Bergqvist, from the emergency services in Sweden (SOS Alarm) and Mr Guy Bley, from the emergency services in Luxembourg (Civil Protection Division) shared their experience from a national emergency service perspective.

Call on raising awareness - 11 February 2008
On 11 February 2008, Commissioner Reding asked national authorities to improve public awareness of 112, after a survey showed that only 22% of EU citizens know they can call 112 throughout Europe in an emergency.

112 Conference - 11 October 2005
On 11 October 2005, the European Commission organised in Brussels a conference dedicated to the single European emergency number 112. Its aim was to help competent authorities in the Member States to improve the level of service provided through 112 by sharing experiences and best. It was the first of its kind gathering administrations with competences both in the civil protection and the electronic communications domains.
Following that first gathering, the Commission set up a specialised body, the Expert Group on Emergency Access (EGEA), consisting of Member State officials representing emergency response centres, civil protection and telecommunication authorities. This expert group seeks practical solutions to problems experienced by the emergency services at local, regional or national levels, and deals with issues related to the application of new technologies for communication with emergency services
