11 April 2006

More than 80 OSS experts from all over Europe joined this year's IDABC Open Source Software workshop, which took place on 11th April 2006 in Prague. The event was jointly organised with the Ministry of Informatics of the Czech Republic (MICR), to discuss concrete aspects of cross-border collaboration between public administrations. While the workshop addressed in particular representatives of the European public sector and policymakers, it also attracted a substantial number of bussiness representatives and researchers from universities.

‘Implementing Open Source Software in Public Administrations: Problems and Solutions’

The workshop's discussions were structured into four sessions:
  • The legal context: how to handle licence problems when producing customized software for administrations.
  • How to procure OSS: presentation and discussions on the basis of the recently published Dutch OSOSS guidelines on procuring Open Source Software.
  • Models for cross-border collaboration: an IDABC study investigates possible models in the context of a common eProcurement platform.
  • Platform for collaboration: the planned IDABC OSS Repository (OSOR) for European eGovernment solutions.
The IDABC event was organised in parallel to the Czech LinuxExpo 2006. It succeeded a Czech national OSS workshop organised by the Ministry of Informatics on the 10th of April.
