Security-related research

Security-related research and innovative security technologies are crucial for the implementation and development of counter-terrorism policies. Thus, the EU brings together the industry and practitioners, as well as provides funding for EU States to access cutting-edge technologies, in order to better protect people and infrastructure.

Research and innovation

To establish research and innovation priorities for the future, the Commission has set up a consultative forum – the European Security Research and Innovation Forum (ESRIF) – which brings together all security research stakeholders. This Forum aims to design a medium and long-term perspective for the EU Security Research and Innovation Agenda. By bringing together the supply and demand sides of security research, the Forum creates a common basis for the planning of research activities and their exploitation, particularly through national and EU programmes. It also contributes to supporting civil security policy-making by providing the appropriate technology and knowledge-base.

In addition to the ESRIF, Public Private Security Policy Partnerships (PPSPP) are developed, where appropriate, which involve all relevant stakeholders, such as EU and national public authorities, industry, academia, NGOs and others.
