Trafficking in human beings: new impetus in fighting the modern form of slavery

Hundreds of thousands of people are trafficked into the EU or within the EU every year. Women and men, boys and girls in vulnerable positions are traded for the purpose of sexual or labour exploitation, removal of organs, begging, domestic servitude, forced marriage, the exploitation of criminal activities, illegal adoption as well as other forms of exploitation.

Coordinated initiatives are needed at EU and national levels to efficiently address this appalling phenomenon. Following the appointment of the EU Anti-trafficking Coordinator and the entry into force of the new EU Directive on trafficking in human beings, the Commission adopted today the EU Strategy towards the Eradication of Trafficking in Human Beings (2012-2016), a set of concrete and practical measures to be implemented in the next five years. This strategy takes a comprehensive approach: it includes prevention, protection and support of the victims, as well as prosecution of the traffickers. It involves a wide range of players, including EU countries, institutions and agencies, international organisations, third countries, civil society and the private sector.

Migration in 2011

The Commission published today its report on last year's developments in the area of immigration and asylum. Several important events and policy developments in the field took place in 2011. The economic downturn, the consequences of the Arab Spring and the pressures on the Schengen area have all put EU solidarity and mutual trust to the test. The third Annual Report on Immigration and Asylum highlights efforts at both EU and national level to tackle together these challenges.

The Commission also published a Eurobarometer survey, carried out in the 27 EU Member States in December 2011. It gives an overview of European citizens' awareness and attitudes towards issues such as cross-border mobility, migration and security. In particular, results show that only one third of Europeans think that discussion about migration in the EU is based on reliable information. The Commission report published today should help to close the information gap.
