Policy

When preparing its policy and proposals relating to consumer safety, public health and the environment, the Commission relies on independent Scientific Committees to provide it with sound scientific advice and draw its attention to new and emerging problems. The Scientific Committees can call on additional expertise from a pool of scientific advisors and a database of experts.

This Scientific Risk Assessment Advisory Structure is managed by the European Commission. The Secretariat of the Scientific Committees, which is located in DG Health and Consumers, is responsible for providing the necessary scientific and administrative support to facilitate the efficient functioning of the Scientific Committees. This includes monitoring compliance with the Rules of Procedure, particularly in relation to the requirements for excellence, independence, transparency and confidentiality, and ensuring communication on the Committees' activities and the appropriate stakeholder dialogue, including organization of hearings, and publication of the opinions and other public documents. Moreover, the Secretariat provides support to the Committees and organizes and applies quality control of the opinions, in particular completeness, consistency, clarity, correspondence with requests and editorial standards.
