A chromosome is a single package of DNA, and a set of associated protein molecules which help keep the DNA tightly coiled. It contains one extremely long DNA molecule, which includes a number of genes and non-genetic DNA sequences. Each human body cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes in its nucleus, including one pair of sex chromosomes.
