Avian influenza H5N1 confirmed in three wild swans in the United Kingdom: authorities applying precautionary measures
IP/08/29 - The UK authorities have today informed the European Commission of the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza in three wild swans at a bird sanctuary in Dorset. At the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, the UK delegation reported that laboratory tests carried out by the Community Reference Laboratory in Weybridge confirmed that it is the H5N1 strain of the virus. There have been no positive cases of H5N1 in wild birds in the EU since mid-August 2007.

Today in Brussels the Health Ministers Council reached a political agreement on the EU Health Programme 2007-2013. A formal common position will have to be adopted by the Council in early 2007, and the Programme will have to go through the European Parliament in second reading.

Member States back a series of veterinary and food safety decisions for after Enlargement
Commission proposals on a number of food safety and animal health issues linked to the forthcoming accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU, have been backed by the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health. Member State veterinary experts voted in favour of granting a list of food establishments transitional periods in which to finish upgrading to EU standards.

Most Europeans consider themselves to be in good health, but 38% feel they are overweight, according to the results of the latest Eurobarometer on Health, Food and Nutrition presented by the European Commission today. The survey, which reveals that 95% of EU citizens agree that obesity is harmful for health, addresses the health and physical characteristics of Europeans, their diet and general eating habits, problems related to being overweight, and their physical activity levels.

The European Commission today adopted a Communication setting out an EU strategy to support Member States in reducing alcohol related harm. The Communication addresses the adverse health effects of harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption in Europe, which is estimated to cause the deaths of 195,000 people a year in the EU.

Updated crop yield forecasts for 2006 and analysis of drought effects
This Memorandum provides additional information, maps and graphs related to IP/06/1097 on the forecast of cereal production and the impacts of drought. During the agricultural season, the Commission_s Directorate General Joint Research Centre (DG JRC) regularly issues forecasts for the main crop yields and produces analyses of the impact of weather conditions on crop production. These are based on advanced methodologies using satellite remote sensing and mathematical models which simulate crop growth.

Avian Influenza: H5 virus confirmed in geese in Hungary
The Hungarian authorities have informed the European Commission of a confirmed outbreak of avian influenza in a domestic flock of geese in Bács-Kiskun, in the south of the country. The tests carried out so far have shown that is a H5 highly pathogenic strain, while it is still to be determined whether or not this is the H5N1 strain.

Reliable health information at the click of a mouse: European Commission launches new Health Portal
In 2005 at least one third of the European adult population, 130 million EU citizens, browsed the web in search of information on health. However, searching for health-related information is not always easy. Comissioner Kyprianou signs product safety memorandum with China
EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou signed in Beijing today a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation with the Chinese authorities aiming to reduce the numbers of dangerous and defective consumer products exported to Europe.

On 16-21 January 2006 European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou will visit the Peoples Republic of China and Hong Kong. He will in particular represent the European Commission at the International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza in Beijing on January 18th.

Commission pledges 80 million to fight bird flu in third countries
At the International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza in Beijing on 17-18 January, the European Commission will pledge its external response to the threat of avian flu, including a grant of up to 80 million to combat the spread of the virus in developing countries, particularly in Asia.
