Crisis preparedness and response

Passengers tracing

When a communicable disease presenting a risk of epidemic spread is introduced in one of the Member States of the European Union after an international flight, it is necessary to be able to trace people in order to contain and prevent further transmission.

Having operating procedures to trace people is therefore essential because communicable diseases can spread rapidly with free movement of people in the borderless Europe and the lack of systematic control.

On 11 July 2009, the European Commission adopted a Decision 2009/547/EC regulating the contact tracing activities at EU level as well as providing appropriate safeguards from the perspective of the protection of personal data.
