Area of activity
The production of a training manual and ready-to-teach modules on children's environmental health, to improve the basic knowledge of professionals working in the field of children's environmental health.

Summary

•	To improve the knowledge of professionals in different disciplines on the relation between health of children and environmental factors in order to use this knowledge in the prevention of health problems or in the eradication of existing environmental health problems.
•	To create a network of public health or environmental health institutes as competent authorities on training in environmental health (with particular reference to children)
•	To identify the training tools used sofar in (pediatric) environmental health;
•	To develop training material and make it available to users in the field (European target group);
•	To disseminate the produced material on a training manual amongst a wide range of disciplines and organizations that have activities in the field of children's health, environment and safety.

Outcomes

A training manual which will be the basis for training new professionals in the field of children's environmental health. This manual will de disseminated to all relevant institutes dealing with training professionals related to environmental health. Material about the training manual will be distributed within the International network on Children's Health, Environment and Safety (INCHES), the EU funded projects PINCHE, CHIlDRENGENONETWORK, PATY, AIRNET, EEN and related conferences/meetings.
Also a pilot training will be organized.

Statement of project aim(s) and objectives

Overall aim:
To improve the knowledge of professionals in different disciplines on the relation between health of children and environmental factors. This knowledge will be used in the prevention of health problems or in reducing existing environmental health problems. The knowledge will be improved by developing a training manual that can be used as a base for training or teaching professionals working in the field of environmental health, with specific attention to children's environmental health.

The specific objectives are:

•	to create a network of public health institutes working on environmental health. These institutes are competent authorities on training in environmental health (with particular reference to children)
•	to identify the training tools, pedagogic and didactic methods, used sofar in training professionals in (pediatric) environmental health;
•	to develop training material for training professionals working in environmental health and make it available to users in the field (European target group); this training material will be collected in the format of a training manual consisting of approximate 10 modules with state of the art training knowledge, including case studies, self-study material, background literature, links to additional information;
•	to disseminate the produced training manual amongst organizations that have activities in the field of children's health, environment and safety.

Methods
In three workshops the following activities will take place:

•	identifying priority issues for training in various sub regions within the European Region (pre-work and);
•	identifying existing material (including material from outside Europe); including a decision on what material is valuable for CHEST;
•	which methods are best suitable to be included in a training course in the (pediatric) environmental health field. An inventory will be discussed;
•	identifying experts (in pediatric environmental health and training); this will be done with assistance of organizations like WHO, UNEP and UNICEF and
•	collecting information on major themes and gaps in the curricula of institutes. and on key points of policy intervention in Europe;
•	drafting outline for training manual and other training material. Collecting of relevant case studies to be included in the training modules.
