Welcome

Health IS a gender issue

Brigitte Triems – President of the European Women’s Lobby (EWL)

The 8th of March – International Women’s Day – reminds us of women’s struggle for their economic, political and social rights in all areas, including health. Women’s health in the EU has improved significantly over the past decade, but gender inequality still harms the physical and mental health of millions of women and girls.

Gender roles and unequal gender relations interact with other social and economic variables, resulting in different and often inequitable patterns of exposure to health risks.

Obstacles to improving women's health exist in all EU countries. They include the feminisation of poverty, high unemployment rates among women, the large presence of women – especially undocumented migrants – in jobs with little or no social protection, and disturbing health inequalities between social classes. Women are still often denied their sexual and reproductive rights, with enormous health consequences.

Violence against women causes physical injury – sometimes death – and affects sexual, reproductive and mental health. It also impacts the health of communities as whole and places a severe economic burden on health care systems and society.

The EWL calls for measures to reduce the health risks faced by women by tackling gender-based vulnerabilities and by providing healthcare and services that are comprehensive, affordable and accessible to all.
