Recientemente, la Comisión Europea pidió al Comité Científico de Seguridad de los Consumidores (CCSC) que presentara un dictamen sobre la seguridad de las nanoformas de sílice, la sílice hidratada y las sílices modificadas superficialmente, como el sililato de sílice y el dimetil-sililato de sílice. Los nanomateriales se utilizan en productos cosméticos —con o sin aclarado— para cabello, piel, labios, cara y uñas.
La Comisión recurre al CCSC cuando existe alguna preocupación acerca de los riesgos sanitarios y de seguridad de los productos de consumo no alimenticios, como los cosméticos y sus ingrediente
