From the wheel to the Internet, inventions have made life easier and more enjoyable, but they  sometimes come at a price.  We've learned that the hard way, with things like fluorocarbons, Styrofoam, asbestos and lead paint, but man's ingenuity and desire to create and make improvements is limitless and new technology and inventions will continue to be introduced.  While we look forward to progress and applaud great ideas, we need watchdogs to protect our greatest treasures – our health and our environment.

This Opinion by the SCENIHR assesses whether the use of Nanosilver, in particular in medical care and in consumer products, poses health risks and whether the use of Nanosilver to control bacterial growth could result in resistance of micro-organisms.

This Opinion assesses the safety of Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) Silicone Breast Implants thus updating the 2012 SCENIHR Opinion on the same subject, taking into account new evidence made available in 2012 and 2013.

Preliminary Opinion on Electromagnetic Fields and potential health effects - February 2014  »

This opinion addresses issues of public concern related to the potential health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. Following the public consultation, the Opinion is now being finalised by SCENIHR, taking into account all contributions received.

This preliminary opinion, with a particular focus on hip implants, was published for public consultation until 25 April 2014. It is now under finalisation by SCENIHR, taking into consideration the contributions received.

This Opinion assesses risks associated with using Bisphenol A (BPA) in medical devices. Following the public consultation, the Opinion is being finalised by SCENIH, taking into consideration contributions received and EFSA’s opinion on the issue.

First Preliminary Opinion on Synthetic Biology – Definition  »

This Opinion aims to establish the requirement for a science-based, operational definition of “Synthetic Biology” and examine its relationship to the genetic modification of organisms. Public consultation open until 21 July.
