The European Commission has today proposed a Communication on the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. This Communication sets out concrete measures to improve elderly citizens' lives, helping them to contribute to society as they grow older, and reducing pressure on health and care systems - ultimately contributing to sustainable growth. The Communication identifies priority areas for actions by health authorities, health professionals, businesses and other relevant stakeholders.

In order to improve preparedness to pandemic influenza and enhance preparation for and management of serious cross-border health threats in the EU, the Commission services have issued a Staff working document on lessons learnt from the H1N1 pandemic and on health security in the European Union. It reports on progress made in recent months and sets out the ongoing and future work of the Commission services in particular by analysing and proposing mechanisms on joint procurement of vaccines and antiviral medication.

Commission appoints new Directors-General for Information Society and Media and Health and Consumers
IP/10/399 Today, the European Commission decided to appoint Mr Robert Madelin as Director-General of the DG for Information Society and Media, to replace Mr Fabio Colasanti, who will retire on 1 April. The Commission also appointed Ms Paola Testori Coggi to replace Mr Madelin as Director-General of the DG for Health and Consumers. Both decisions will take effect on 1 April.

Guidance MEDDEVs
The guidelines aim at promoting a common approach by manufacturers and Notified Bodies involved in the conformity assessment procedures according to the relevant annexes of the Directives, and by the Competent Authorities charged with safeguarding Public Health.
They have been carefully drafted through a process of consultation with various interested parties during which intermediate drafts were circulated and comments were taken up in the documents. Therefore, they reflect positions taken in particular by representatives of Competent Authorities and Commission Services, Notified Bodies, industry and other interested parties in the medical devices sector.
