The European Union is committed to ensure a high level of public health protection and in the framework of medicines and treatments it particularly works at different levels. More precisely, key aims are to provide safe and effective medicines, to give patients easy access to medicines and at an affordable cost.
Of utmost importance for the Union is to ensure high coverage of disease control through treatments for vulnerable groups such as those suffering from rare diseases or for special patients like children are. For these reasons the Community aims to promote development of innovative new therapy and to facilitate the free movement of medicines and treatments throughout the EU. More information to patients has been identified as a must for enabling patients to access objective and comprehensible information and to ensure appropriate consumption of medicines.
