Avian influenza H5N1 confirmed in three wild swans in the United Kingdom: authorities applying precautionary measures

IP/08/29 - The UK authorities have today informed the European Commission of the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza in three wild swans at a bird sanctuary in Dorset. At the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, the UK delegation reported that laboratory tests carried out by the Community Reference Laboratory in Weybridge confirmed that it is the H5N1 strain of the virus. There have been no positive cases of H5N1 in wild birds in the EU since mid-August 2007.

Avian Influenza: Member States endorse measures for Poland, Romania and UK

IP/07/1839 - Following recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Poland and Romania, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health today voted in favour of a Decision setting out the eradication and control measures for both Member States. The measures in place in the UK, in response to the outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza on turkey holdings in Norfolk in November, were also re-confirmed.

Avian Influenza: H5 virus confirmed in geese in Hungary

The Hungarian authorities have informed the European Commission of a confirmed outbreak of avian influenza in a domestic flock of geese in Bács-Kiskun, in the south of the country. The tests carried out so far have shown that is a H5 highly pathogenic strain, while it is still to be determined whether or not this is the H5N1 strain.

The Slovenian authorities today informed the European Commission of a confirmed case of avian influenza virus H5 in swan. Avian influenza: expectations surpassed as international community pledges USD 1.9 bn in Beijing

The international community has pledged a total amount of $1.9 billion dollars to fight avian influenza and prepare for a possible human influenza pandemic, EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou announced today in his concluding speech at the International Ministerial Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza in Beijing, China.

Commissioner Kyprianou visits China to discuss avian flu, influenza preparedness and product safety

On 16-21 January 2006 European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou will visit the Peoples Republic of China and Hong Kong. He will in particular represent the European Commission at the International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza in Beijing on January 18th.

Commission pledges 80 million to fight bird flu in third countries

At the International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza in Beijing on 17-18 January, the European Commission will pledge its external response to the threat of avian flu, including a grant of up to 80 million to combat the spread of the virus in developing countries, particularly in Asia.
