European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA)

This pilot scheme aims to increase the average healthy lifespan of Europeans by 2 years by 2020, by:

  • improving health and quality of life (with a focus on older people);
  • ensuring health and social care systems are sustainable and efficient in the long term;
  • enhancing the competitiveness of EU industry through business and expansion in new markets.

As active and healthy ageing is a challenge shared by all European countries, it offers Europe an opportunity to establish itself as a global leader capable of providing innovative responses to this challenge.

How does the partnership work?

Through cooperation between the European Commission and EU countries, regions, industry, health and social care professionals and organisations representing older people and patients.

This collaborative partnership aims to improve older peoples' lives, helping them to contribute to society, and reduce pressure on health and care systems - ultimately contributing to sustainable growth.

Priority areas for action have been identified in the 2011 Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) and Operational Plan (OP) adopted by the steering group responsible for launching and implementing the partnership.

In February 2012, the Commission adopted a Communication on the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing in support of the SIP. Stakeholders have started to work together in Action Groups to make this plan a reality.
