Public Consultation on the pilot European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy ageing

The European Commission is seeking the views of public and private organisations, companies and citizens on how Europe could scale up innovation to meet the challenges of the ageing population in Europe, and in particular on a pilot European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on active and healthy ageing.

Between 2010 and 2030, the number of Europeans aged over 65 will rise by nearly 40%, posing challenges, yet offering opportunities for Europe's society and economy.

The EIP to be launched in 2011 will aim to:

  • Improve the health and quality of life of older people;

  • Enable them to live active and independent lives;

  • Contribute to the sustainability and efficiency of health and social care systems;

  • Foster competitiveness and growth of businesses.

Objective of the consultation

  • Complete the mapping and gather further details on existing national, regional and local initiatives. These could be opportunities for synergies between sectors and levels, and form the basis for European level actions.

  • Seek views on the weaknesses in the European innovation system to be addressed by the partnership;

  • Gather evidence of existing activities with similar goals which might give guidance in the development of the pilot partnership;

  • Collect preliminary ideas for future actions, where innovation in active and healthy ageing solutions could have significant impact for citizens, care systems and markets;

  • Help involve key players and prepare concrete actions in relevant policy areas of the Partnership. These actions could range from scaling-up existing initiatives with proven efficiency to carrying on research and developing entirely new solutions to address the active and healthy ageing challenge.
