"Ex-smokers are unstoppable" is the slogan of the EU-wide campaign launched today by European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dalli. Tobacco is the single largest cause of avoidable illness in the European Union and the estimated cause of death of over 650,000 people in the European Union every year. 1 in 3 people smoke. The 3 year campaign being launched today will focus on the positive effects of stopping smoking and will use a coordinated mix of advertising, social media, events and practical tools to reach smokers and help them quit.

The agreed common objective is to promote and deepen partnership between Europe and China by strengthening people-to-people links and cooperation in various fields, notably youth. The Year will kick-off with an opening ceremony to be held on 11 January in Brussels. To promote the Year, a creative Logo and Slogan is being looked for. The European Youth Forum has just published a call for ideas addressed to all young people in the EU aged 18-35. The logo/slogan shall be dynamic and capture the spirit of the EU-China Youth Year. It shall be original and the own work of the entrants.

On 24 September 2010, the Commission launches a public consultation on the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive (2001/37/EC). The Commission invites all stakeholders to give their input on the different options and to comment on possible measures to improve awareness of the dangers of tobacco use, increase motivation to quit and discourage initiation of smoking. Examples of such measures that could be considered are bigger, double-sided health pictorial warnings on cigarette packages, plain packaging and the regulation of harmful, addictive and attractive substances in tobacco products. This consultation is an important step towards the adoption of a legislative proposal planned for beginning of 2012. Deadline: 19th November 2010

Many of them will miss opportunities because they lack the right qualifications or experience. 15 September 2010, the European Commission launches Youth on the Move, a new flagship initiative aimed at helping these young people to gain the knowledge, skills and experience they need to make their first job a reality. Youth on the Move proposes 28 key actions aimed at making education and training more relevant to young people's needs and encouraging more of them to take advantage of EU grants to study or train in another country. This will increase young people's employability and access to the labour market.

European Research on Youth - Supporting young people to participate fully in society

The European Commission published a report on the contribution of European research to youth. The publication examines the results of youth-related socio-economic research projects funded under Research Framework Programmes. This review of projects focused on youth and how to best ensure their transition into working life, on strategies for social inclusion of young people and on their full participation as citizens in society. Its main purpose is to distil some common themes which recur in the projects and which are of interest to policy-makers. On the basis of this evidence, concrete recommendations are made to policy-makers as well as to those working with young people.

In the framework of the HELP campaign, promoting a life without tobacco for young people, new videos, an iPhone application and TV spots were created in addition to a brand new website! The videos and TV spots are featuring tips to help not lighting a cigarettes and encourage you to go to the HELP campaign website for real and working tips. The iPhone application is featuring a little character whom you have to help not to smoke! It is a challenge, are you up for it?? In 2008 DG SANCO commissioned RAND Europe to conduct a study on "The affordability of alcoholic beverages in the European Union - Understanding the link between alcohol affordability, consumption and harms". The Commission is continuing to develop initiatives on areas that are closely related to the 2003 Council Recommendation on the prevention and reduction of health-related harm associated with drug dependence and that take actively into account policies and practices that might be of significant influence to the achievement of its main activities as foreseen by the EU Drugs Strategy 2005-2012 and the EU Drugs Action Plans (2005-2008 and 2009-2012). The Commission launched work on drug treatment in EU as well as prevention, treatment and harm reduction services and on drugs and prisons. To prepare these activities, a call for tender on drugs policy and harm reduction was published in 2006.

The European Youth Forum presents its position on the health and well-being of young people. With this policy paper, the EYF recommends concrete actions addressing the needs of young people in specific areas of health, namely sexual and reproductive health, mental health, addictions, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, health at work, and to highlight the link existing between health and sustainable development.
