Women

Women

On average women live more than 6 years longer than men, although this figure varies considerably across EU countries. In spite of women’s generally good health, they do suffer significant levels of disability due to long-term illness. Osteoporosis, for instance, is one of the major concerns affecting women as they get older. The most frequent causes of premature death are diseases of the circulatory system, followed by cancer. In recent decades, several specific health issues have emerged, including: eating disorders (mostly afflicting teenagers and young women), HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health problems, abortion, violence against women, with its adverse impact on physical and psychological health and related high number of attempted suicides.
