Being a man or a woman determine differential risks, exposure and susceptibility to disease.   Biological factors make women and men vulnerable to certain illnesses in differing degrees and severity and at different periods over their lifetime. For instance, there are significant differences between men and women in mechanisms of infection from HIV/AIDS. Across Europe, overall cancer mortality is higher in men than in women, most frequently from cancer of the lungs, prostate and colon/rectum.
