Biological Risks

Biological Risks

A biological agent is a micro-organism which could cause an infection, allergy or toxic effects. Biological agents differ in terms of risk of infection. Some agents are unlikely to cause disease in humans, while others can do but are unlikely to spread to the community, and there is usually an effective treatment available. Finally, there are biological agents that can cause severe human disease, with a high risk of spreading to the community and no effective treatments available.
