Biological health risks are linked to the exposure to bacteria, viruses, fungi, other micro-organisms and associated toxins. These micro-organisms are widespread in nature and represent a potential danger for public health.
The EU aims to guarantee high standards of health protection and minimise the risks of exposure to potentially harmful biological agents through:
• a coordinated, holistic approach to food hygiene policy to ensure the biological safety of food
• responding in a coordinated way to threats caused by communicable diseases by strengthening the way information is shared between EU Member States and the European Commission including the use of informatics tools for early warning and response.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm specialises in assessing the risk posed by biological agents and advises the EU on options available to respond in an appropriate way.
