EU Health Prize for Journalists 2013

National Jury Poland

The jury met on 15 November 2013 and selected the Polish national finalist. The name of the national finalist will be published after all the finalists are selected.


Bartosz Zadura, chair

Bartosz Zadura - Media Officer in the European Commission Representation in Poland. For 13 years he worked as a journalist, editor and producer ("Dziennik" daily newspaper, the BBC Polish Section and others).


Dorota Romanowska, journalist

Marek Balicki, health expert

A physician, a politician, an activist of „Solidarity” of the 80s, a manager of several hospitals, an experienced member of
Parliament (during its first and second terms), a senator to the fifth term Senate of the Republic of Poland, Secretary of State in Hanna Suchocka's government, Health Minister in Leszek Mliller's and Marek Belka's governments.
Currently, a member of the sixth term of Parliament and Chief Executive Officer of the Wolski Hospital in Warsaw.
Adam Kozierkiewicz Graduate of Faculty of Medicine at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (1992), and School of Public Health at the same Univesity, as well as post-graduate trainings at Harvard and Budapest University. Work experience at the Jagiellonian University, Ministry of Health, Republic of Poland and the European Investment Bank. Major area of interest and expertise are health information, health economy and management.


Piotr Cieśliński, journalist

The editor of Gazeta Wyborcza, the largest nationwide daily in Poland. In the mid-90s co-founded the first science section in Polish press. Graduated in Department of Physics at University of Warsaw.

His articles have won numerous awards, including Polish Physical Society, Polish Association of Scientific Journalists, Climate Coalition, Polish Association of Wind Energy. He is a scholarship-holder of prestigious Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at MIT in Cambridge (USA). 


Magdalena Cedzyńska, health expert

Magdalena Cedzynska has been working in Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology since 2001. From the very beginning of her work, she is a director of smoking cessation service (national Polish Quitline and walk-in smoking cessation clinic).

She is engaged in treatment of tobacco dependence issues – organizing and lecturing at trainings for health professionals, administrating clinical trials and observations, writing publications on smoking cessation. She contributed to development of Consensus of Medical Health Care Providers on Diagnosis and Treatment of Tobacco Dependence and she is a co-author of the Guideline on treatment of tobacco dependence for Health Professionals (in press).

She is a member of International Network of Women Against Tobacco (INWAT) Europe Advisory Board.
