EU Health Prize for Journalists 2013

National Jury Austria

 The jury met on 18 November 2013 and selected the Austrian national finalist. The name of the national finalist will be published after all the finalists are selected.


Heinz Rudolf Miko, chair

Before entering the European Commission in 1997, Heinz-Rudolf Miko held positions in company and politic consulting agencies, development cooperation as well as journalism. During his career in the European Commission he worked in the Directorates General for Agriculture (1997-1999), External Trade (1999-2001) and External Relations, especially to the USA and Canada (2003-2006). Similarly, he served in the Commissions Representation in Bonn, Germany (2006-2012) where he was responsible for Information and Communication. Currently, he is the Head of Press Relations at the Commissions Representation in Vienna.


Reinhard Dörflinger, health expert

Reinhard Dörflinger is a medical doctor and family physician, working in a primary care group practice in Vienna and acting as trainer in general and addiction medicine, focusing on doctor-patient-communication, psychosomatic symptoms and narratives in the consultation.
He has extensive experiences in humanitarian international medical projects, working worldwide with Doctors without border since 1995. From 2008 to 2011 he has been elected international Vice-president of Msf-International. 


Franz Pietsch, health expert

Franz Pietsch is Deputy Director General of Directorate and has been head of Department II/1 at the Federal Ministry of Health since July 2010. In the latter position he is Ombudsman for the Protection of Non-Smokers and is in charge of subject-related and legal matters concerning tobacco, alcohol and non-substance addiction as well as international drug affairs. Before that Mr. Pietsch served as Personal Assistant to the Austrian State Secretayr for Health & Deputy Head of
Cabinet (2000 – 2002) a.o. Since 2002 he has been a Full Member of the Board of Directors of the EMCDDA. Mr. Pietsch was born in 1960.


Josef Gebhard, journalist

Health and science editor of the daily newspaper “Kurier”.
He started his journalistic career in 1999 as a freelance health editor for a health website. Since 2000 he is health and science editor of the daily newspaper “Kurier”. From 2005-2007 he additionally worked as freelance editor for a motor magazine (“auto touring”). In 2006 he received the award for health journalism by the Austrian religious order hospitals.


Robert Buchacher, journalist

Dr. Robert Buchacher has been Science editor-inchief of the magazine “Profil” since 1997. He studied journalism and art history. From 1974 to 1984 he worked as home affairs editor for “Profil” and from 1986 to 1996 as editor for chronicle and society, becoming later editor-in-chief of this department. Mr. Buchacher is also author of several books and won the “Austrian Medical Association’s award for medical journalism” in 1996 and the “Kardinal-Innitzer-Prize for science journalism” in 2004. In 2008 he received the “State Prize for Scientific Journalism of the Republic of Austria”. He was born in 1944.
