Siguranţa pacienţilor
În fiecare an, milioane de pacienţi europeni se îmbolnăvesc în timp ce li se acordă asistenţă medicală. Infecţiile asociate îngrijirilor medicale şi erorile de diagnosticare şi tratament pot avea efecte deosebit de grave, chiar fatale. Acestea pot afecta negativ atât pacienţii şi familiile acestora, cât şi personalul sanitar. În plus, necesită cheltuieli semnificative, punând sub presiune sistemele de sănătate. Numeroase astfel de efecte pot fi însă evitate. UE a demarat o serie de iniţiative în domeniul siguranţei pacienţilor, vizând inclusiv prevenirea şi controlul infecţiilor asociate îngrijirilor medicale. Comisia sprijină eforturile statelor membre şi promovează schimbul de bune practici în domeniul siguranţei pacienţilor şi al calităţii serviciilor de asistenţă medicală.

ECDC publishes reports on healthcare-associated infections in Europe
The reports include data from HAI-Net surveillance on healthcare-associated infections in Europe for 2007 and on surgical site infections in Europe for 2008–2009. ECDC also publishes the HAI-Net protocol for surveillance of surgical site infections in European hospitals.

Aceasta presupune informații obiective privind caracteristicile medicamentelor și bolile pentru care sunt recomandate, precum și prevenirea informațiilor nesolicitate sau a publicității mascate.

Commission takes steps to promote patient safety in Europe
Each year, in the EU, between 8% and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals suffer harm from the healthcare they receive, including from healthcare associated infections. Much of that harm is preventable. Today, the Commission adopts a Communication and proposal for a Council Recommendation with specific actions that Member States can take, either individually, collectively or with the Commission, to improve the safety of patients.
