Joka vuosi miljoonilla potilailla on EU:ssa vastoinkäymisiä sairaanhoidon yhteydessä. Hoitoon liittyvät infektiot, diagnosointi- tai lääkitysvirheet voivat johtaa vakaviin terveyshaittoihin ja jopa kuolemaan. Ongelma on vakava paitsi potilaille ja heidän perheilleen myös terveydenhuollon ammattilaisille. Lisäksi tästä koituu terveydenhuoltojärjestelmille huomattavia kustannuksia.
Ongelmat ovat kuitenkin suurelta osin vältettävissä. EU on käynnistänyt potilasturvallisuuden parantamiseksi useita toimia, joissa pyritään esimerkiksi ehkäisemään ja hallitsemaan hoidon yhteydessä tarttuvia infektioita. Komissio tukee EU-maita niiden toimissa ja auttaa niitä jakamaan parhaita toimintamalleja potilasturvallisuuden ja terveydenhuollon laadun alalla.

The event was organised by Health First Europe and gathered experts as well as EU institutions' representatives.

The reports include data from HAI-Net surveillance on healthcare-associated infections in Europe for 2007 and on surgical site infections in Europe for 2008–2009. ECDC also publishes the HAI-Net protocol for surveillance of surgical site infections in European hospitals.

The Council today adopted a regulation and a directive aimed at strengthening the EU system for the safety monitoring of medicinal products for human use ("pharmacoviligance"). This follows a first-reading agreement with the European Parliament.

The European Commission adopted a Communication and a proposal for a Council Recommendation on patient safety, including the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections.
Each year, in the EU, between 8% and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals suffer harm from the healthcare they receive, including from healthcare associated infections. Much of that harm is preventable. Today, the Commission adopts a Communication and proposal for a Council Recommendation with specific actions that Member States can take, either individually, collectively or with the Commission, to improve the safety of patients.
The short film clip describes the patient safety challenges that all EU health systems face today. These includes one of the most common causes of harm - healthcare associated infections. It also explains that measures can be taken to improve patient safety and sets out a role for the EU in supporting Member States in this process.
