    Other  RICS is incorporated by Royal Charter, which sets out our objectives.
    National legislation:
    The Royal Charter requires us to promote the usefulness of the profession for the public advantage in the UK and in other parts of the world. In practice, the Charter means that important changes to RICS' constitution - its bye-laws - have to be ratified by the UK Government, through the Privy Council, even after they have been approved by a majority of RICS members voting at a general meeting.

    Description of activities:
    Chartered Surveyors are professionals who measure, value, protect and enhance the world’s physical assets. The main disciplines of surveying practice fall into three broad sectors of Land, Property and Construction. Chartered Valuation Surveyors provide accurate valuations which are vital to a healthy property market and a stable economy, forming the basis of performance analysis, financing decisions, transactional or development advice, dispute resolution and taxation. Chartered Valuation Surveyors operate across a wide range of asset types, working in both the public and private sector, though the most common asset classes include commercial, residential or rural property. Some Chartered Valuation Surveyors practice exclusively in one of these areas, while others deal with a wider variety of property types.
