Forum for a Better Functioning Food Supply Chain

Forum for a Better Functioning Food Supply Chain

The European Commission set up a new High Level Forum for a Better Functioning Food Supply Chain to help develop policy in the food and drink sector and contribute to a better functioning food supply chain. A new Commission decision, providing a new mandate, was adopted on 1 June 2015.

The Forum had already identified new challenges affecting the competitiveness of the agro-food industry and advised the Commission on how to tackle them. From 2010 until 2014, it implemented the recommendations of the High Level Group on the Competitiveness of the Agro-Food Industry that it was set up to replace.

Under the previous mandate, members of the Forum included high-level representatives of 21 EU countries, companies, trade unions, business federations and civil society. They represented the agro-food supply chain from across Europe.

The Forum's recommendations are addressed to policy makers and private stakeholders.

The High Level Forum (2015-2019)

The Forum today comprises EU country national authorities responsible for the food sector at ministerial level and representatives of the private sector, namely:

  • organisations actively involved in the agro-food industry, and in the trade and distribution of agro-food products in the Union
  • EU umbrella associations and federations representing agriculture, food processing, trade and the distribution of agro-food products in the EU
  • non-governmental organisations, with expertise in matters relating to the food supply chain.

All EU countries' authorities will be represented in the Forum. Representatives of the private sector have been selected on the basis of a public call for applications. The list of Forum members and the rules of procedure has been published in the Commission's register of expert groups.
