High quality academic research should underpin public policies to support corporate social responsibility and feed into the CSR practices of enterprises and other stakeholders. The European Commission has supported a number of important CSR research projects.

Project: Impact Measurement and Performance Analysis of CSR 2010 – 2013,

Summary: This project created new tools and further developed existing ones to measure the impact of CSR at different levels.

Project: The legal framework for human rights and the environment (1 MB) 2010
Leader Organization: University of Edinburgh
Summary (345 kB): This study clarifies the current legal framework for human rights and the environment applicable to European companies operating outside the EU.

Project: Study on Responsible Supply Chain Management 2011
Leader Organization: Adelphi
Summary: Correlated with the UN Business and Human Rights Framework, this study identifies good practices and challenges in supply chain management.

Summary: The aim was to understand the nature of societal expectations regarding corporate behaviour and the corporate response to these demands from a business strategy perspective.

Project: ESTER, 2004-2007

Summary: This study examines the social practices of companies in the context of economic globalisation. It explores the relationship between social responsibility, international trade, and the workers' rights.

Summary: This project mobilised researchers in supporting and developing research on corporate social responsibility and business in society issues within the European Research Area.

Summary: This project aimed to improve understanding of how CSR can be enhanced in the EU and contribute to sustainable development through a combination of theoretical and practical research.

Project: Innovative strategies for CSR project, 2005-2008

Summary: The project describes nine leading EU corporations and their challenges in developing and implementing global CSR strategies. In 2009, "The global CSR case-book" was published.
