Conference "Towards a new EU Plant Health Law"
A second conference concerning the review of the Common Plant Health Regime took place in Brussels on 28 September 2010. It was organised by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency.
Participation was open to Member State plant health services, stakeholders' organisations and NGOs, international organisations, third country representatives and the general public.
The outcome of the evaluation of the Community Plant Health Regime and the recommendations made in the evaluation report for the new plant health law were presented by the evaluation consortium. The planning of the review of the legislation and the consultation process were also presented. A plenary discussion took place to assess which recommendations from the evaluation should be included in the impact assessment.
The conference was opened by Mr John Dalli, Commissioner for Health and Consumers, and Ms. Sabine Laruelle, Federal Minister of Belgium responsible for Agriculture. A keynote lecture was presented by Mr. Paolo de Castro, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development.

Side visit of the Commissioner to nursery "Boomkwekerij Van Goidsenhoven"
After attending the opening lectures of the conference, Mr John Dalli, Commissioner for Health and Consumers, and Ms. Sabine Laruelle, Federal Minister of Belgium for Agriculture visited the nursery "Boomkwekerij Van Goidsenhoven" in Holsbeek, in the presence of the media and press.
The Belgian Food Safety Inspection agency FAVV / AFSCA explained the implementation of the EU plant health legislation to Mr Dalli and Ms Laruelle, and demonstrated how Acer palmatum trees are inspected for the presence of the Citrus long-horned beetle (Anoplophora chinensis). A tour was made of the nursery, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this autumn.
