Two new EFSA overall opinions
Two new EFSA overall opinions on a genetically modified oilseed rape were published on 15 December 2009 which are
related to an application for the renewal of the authorisation for some food and feed uses.
In accordance with Regulation
(EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed, the public may make comments on these opinions during 1 month.

Antimicrobial resistance
The European Commission adopted a staff working paper that aims to be the basis of discussion on the ways
to better tackle the growing health problem of anti-microbial resistance (AMR). The document concludes that, although progress has been made, further actions are needed to improve the assessment and management of AMR.

Evaluation of the EU legislation on GM food and feed
A survey of stakeholders has been underway as part of this evaluation. Although the deadline
for taking part in this survey has expired, any stakeholders who would like to contribute, but
have not yet done so, can request a link to the survey from the Food Chain Evaluation Consortium
using this email address: gm@civic-consulting.de. Please note that only responses received before
the end of Friday 13 November will be taken into account.

Animal welfare labelling: Commission report launches in-depth political debate
The European Commission has adopted yesterday 28 October a report in which it outlines
a series of options for animal welfare labelling. The overall goal of policy in this area is
to make it easier for consumers to identify and choose welfare-friendly products, and thereby give
an economic incentive to producers to improve the welfare of animals. The report also presents options for
the possible establishment of a European Network of Reference Centres for the protection and welfare of animals.

EU Veterinary Week 2009 (28 September - 4 October 2009).
The key slogan retained for the EU Veterinary Week 2009 is "Animals + Humans = One health" which stresses the link between animal and public health.
The week opened with a conference in Brussels on Monday 28 September, at the Cellars of Cureghem, entitled "Animals + Humans = One health". More information on the conference can be found here.
A conference entitled "Influenza at the interface between humans and animals" is planned for Friday 30 October in the Charlemagne building in Brussels. More information on the conference can be found here.

A call for new members of the EFSA Management Board has been launched. The Commission is organising a selection procedure to replace seven members of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) whose mandates will expire on 30 June 2010.

DG SANCO conference: 30 Years Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) – Keeping an eye on your food, 16 July 2009, Brussels, Belgium
At the occasion of the celebration of the 30 years of the RASFF, Commissioner Vassiliou will open a high-level conference organised with the
participation of Member States, representatives of countries from around the world, consumers and businesses.
A brand new RASFF public portal and a new IT application replacing the current RASFF public weekly will also be launched.
Furthermore, a video, as well as the 2008 Annual Report will be presented,
together with a special booklet on the 30 years of the system and an explanatory leaflet on what is RASFF all about and how it works. All will be available online from 16 July.

Towards a long-term EU strategy against Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Western Corn Rootworm)
The Commission has decided to carry out an analysis of the economic, social and environmental impacts of options for the long-term EU strategy against Diabrotica virgifera, a regulated harmful organism of maize.
