MEETING OF THE SUB-COMMITTEE ON ANIMAL WELFARE

21 September 1999

1. Adoption of the Agenda

The agenda was adopted as proposed.

2. Adoption of the minutes of the previous meeting of the subcommittee

The summary record of the meeting of the subcommittee of 1 March 1999 was adopted without amendment.

3. Declarations of interest

No member reported any conflicts of interest relating to the items under discussion

4. Discussion and possible approval of reports of the Subcommittee

Standards for forced ventilation for animal transport vehicles for journeys of more than eight hours for the bovine, porcine, ovine and caprine species

The working document was discussed in detail and the general principles were agreed. In the absence of Prof. Hartung the Subcommittee members decided to complete the existing document by the addition of new material. It was agreed to circulate the new draft by electronic mail with a view to resolving any remaining problems prior to the next meeting. Following approval at the next meeting of the subcommittee, the draft could be discussed with a view to its adoption by the Scientific Committee on Animal health and animal welfare at its meeting in early December.

5. Progress report and discussion on report of the Welfare requirements for broilers

The current working document had been distributed to the members of the subcommittee prior to the meeting. Prof. Jensen, rapporteur for this matter described the work carried out to date by the working group and that which remained. In brief most of the data collection had now been completed The socio-economic analysis and final discussion and conclusions still remained to be done. The report was on target for completion in the Spring of next year. The Subcommittee were satisfied with the state of progress and looked forward to receiving the final working document in the Spring.

6. Miscellaneous

Future activities of the Sub-Committee

Two new projects had been put to the Committee by the Commission, an examination of the welfare of animals farmed for fur and an examination of the welfare of cattle kept for fattening. The subcommittee asked Dr Dantzer and Dr Le Neindre respectively to examine these issues with a view to the formation of working groups at the next meeting of the subcommittee.
