Future of Scientific Advice

Public Hearing - 4 and 5 November 1999

As a consequence of the Communication of the European Commission on Consumer Health and Food Safety (COM(93)183) of 30 April 1997, a new system of scientific advice was established within the Commission. This consists of 8 thematic Scientific Committees and a supervisory Scientific Steering Committee. These all operate under the principles of excellence, independence and transparency.

The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General, which is responsible for the administrative management of the Scientific Committees, has asked three experts (Professors Philip James, Fritz Kemper and Gérard Pascal), in their capacity of independent scientific experts, to examine the current system for the generation of scientific advice and to make recommendations for its improved organisation in the future. The full text of the mandate given to them has been made public

The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General provides the Professors with secretarial assistance to fulfil their mandate and covers expenditure linked to its completion 1 .

To facilitate their mission, the Professors have asked the FSA secretariat to organise a meeting with the stakeholders in order to hear their views and benefit from their experience in relation to scientific advice.
