Future of
Scientific Advice
Recently, DG XXIV asked three eminent
Professors, members of the Scientific Committees of the
European Commission, to reflect on the current system for
the provision of scientific advice to the Commission, in
the light of the first year and a half of operations within
the new structure of DG XXIV.
The mandate for this mission foresees
three main tasks, namely to reflect on the purposes of the
EC scientific advice system, to analyse the generation of
scientific advice and to present options and
recommendations for the organisation of scientific advice
in the future.
The three Professors, Prof. W. P. T.
James, Prof. F. H. Kemper and Prof. G. Pascal, will work
entirely independently of DG XXIV. However, DG XXIV will
provide them with secretarial assistance to fulfil their
mandate and will cover expenditure linked to its
completion.
The Professors have been requested to
deliver a final report by November 1999. The report will be
made publicly available at that time.
